ESPN Splash Screens

The DMED design team was tasked to create new splash animation screens for the ESPN apps on mobile and TV. Our goal was to showcase those heroic moments in sports through venues, athletes, and fans. As Creative Lead, I partnered with closely with ESPN’s brand, and marketing teams and directed the motion team through several themes. Wherever possible we emphasized the brand’s use of typography, color, motion and overall design language.

The following work was completed by Disney Media Entertainment & Distribution Technology team in partnership with ESPN. The projects I’ve selected were the focus of my time, direction, involvement, and design.

Concept #1: Play-By-Play

This concept was designed to be an endless loop to be used on commercial slates for streaming TV where content or advertisements could not be shown.

GOALS + PRINCIPLES

Create a delightful brand-reinforcing moment for our fans across ESPN app experiences.

First Impression
We take advantage of the initial exposure to the brand in a big way by creating an emotional connection to the ESPN brand through visuals and motion.

The Second Rule
We should always strive to shorten the distance between our audience and content. Tailor the time to an adequate amount to create a video loop or vignette with a sense of presence.

Less is More
Use platform constraints as a baseline, so the brand feels cohesive across all experiences.  As platform capabilities increase so can fidelity.

Concept #2: Arena

This concept uses materials, objects and textures from the sports world.
